My Experience Facilitating Kimberly Ann Johnson’s MotherCircle Program
I recently completed teaching my first round of Kimberly Ann Johnson’s 8 week MotherCircle class and feel deeply honoured by the experience. This sacred gathering explores the depths and dimensions of motherhood through collective wisdom, personal reflection, and embodied practices.
The 8-Week Motherhood Journey: Winter to Spring Transition
Eight mothers/mothers-to-be joined me on this 8 week cycle through the many different facets of motherhood.
We met each Sunday morning starting in the depths of winter in early January finishing today in early March as the first signs of spring emerged. Each week we gathered around the fire each week, literally warming ourselves around the stove, while diving into a new topic.
Building Authentic MotherCulture: Connection & Vulnerability
What began as a group of relative strangers transformed into a circle of trust and authenticity. Throughout these sessions together we traversed many different terrains and found ways to locate ourselves in these new terrains, getting to know each other and ourselves, through sharing and being vulnerable. Each week, we first grounded ourselves in familiar practices while subsequently discovering new ones. As a result we became increasingly familiar with our felt sense and the power of being present to what is.
Moreover, we moved through an arc of a journey – beginning, middle and end. Consequently, through it each of us has grown, and MotherCulture has expanded with us throughout this journey.
The Curriculum: Exploring Motherhood’s Many Dimensions
The curriculum took us took us through a tapestry of motherhood:
-
Firstly, mythology and motherhood archetypes that have shaped our understanding
-
Secondly, practices for opening the capacity of our nervous system capacity
- Thirdly, postpartum healing and integration
-
Then, birth story healing and resolution
-
Also, sexuality and its evolution through motherhood
-
As well as work, self-value, and the balance we all seek
-
And finally, core motherhood values that helped guide our future parenting choices
Transformation Stories: How MotherCircle Changes Mothers’ Lives
Our gatherings not only filled the roomwith playfulness and fun, but also made space for the full spectrum of emotions—grief, anger, joy, laughter, and above all, honest expression.
I realise how much this type of gathering and work nourishes me – to gather in authentic connection with other mothers building Mother Culture together, with the intention to build a better world for our children.
