Dysfunction in postpartum women is very common and even though much goes undiagnosed the estimates of diagnosed dysfunction are as high. And far too often, women are left to navigate the physical and emotional aftermath alone. If left untreated, issues like this tend to get worse as women age and reach menopause. About one in five women will undergo surgery for genital prolapse or urinary incontinence by the age of 85.
So, I wanted to share a little of my experience of training to become an ‘Ecstatic Birth Practitioner’ over the past year. Signing up to this training was an intuitive leap of faith in the middle of the first lockdown of 2020 – I had already come across Sheila Kamara Hay – who created and runs the training – and I just had an instinct that it was going to be the support I needed for both my own development and for that of my clients; that instinct turned out to be completely spot on.
I often try to convey to women the potential benefits of post-natal healing and Holistic Pelvic Care, but it’s patients themselves that usually say it best. This week, I received this message from Alexa and she has been very generous in allowing me to share it with you. I was so touched by her beautiful words that capture the liminal dimension that can be difficult to express. I thank her from my heart for describing her journey in a way that is so helpful for other women.
Women often come to me with pelvic floor dysfunction after having had a traumatic vaginal delivery often with tearing or an episiotomy. The women I see have frequently already seen a specialist about this and been prescribed kegel exercises yet the problem is not improving. This is an outline of my approach to this problem.
Where does pelvic pain come from? Pelvic pain and dysfunction after having a baby is complex and can stem from any tissue that resides in that area. There are numerous tissues in the pelvic region that can cause pain. What causes it? And what does it mean? Part 2 of my ongoing series.
Not feeling right in your pelvis after giving birth is extremely common and unfortunately ‘tolerated’ by a lot of women. I frequently hear stories of women who have been putting up with ‘not feeling right’ for years and they just didn’t know that they could get help.
I am writing this for everyone but particularly for those women who are currently pregnant. The uncertainty and change that surrounds us at the moment is affecting each of us in very different ways. I really want to reach out and provide support to the pregnant women out there, many of whom will be feeling things acutely at the moment.
I’m not one to share personal stuff usually but this week it feels right to share with other women out there. This is my experience this week related to women’s health and shifting from contraction into expansion, from reaction into resonance.
The idea of writing a piece about the Root Chakra came to me during my yoga class last week with the wonderful James Cassidy at East of Eden. We were focusing on the Root Chakra; with the change of seasons upon us, we were getting a sense of being grounded and secure through this transitional period.
